THE MAN WHO BEAT THE TRAIN. After a serious accident, Karl Abarth abandoned motorbike racing and designed a sidecar with which he managed to beat the Orient Express on the 1,300-kilometre (810 miles) stretch from Vienna to Ostend in 1934.
ACCELERATION RECORD. In 1965, Karl Abarth was already 57 years old when he went on a diet
of apples to lose 30 kilograms (over 66 pounds!) in order to fit into his 105hp Fiat Abarth “1000 Monoposto Record” and set a new world record at the legendary Monza race track.
A RACING DRIVER, A CHAMPION. Called to replace a driver who had fallen ill, Karl Abarth
achieved the fastest time in the first practice session. The other drivers accused him of having tampered with the vehicle and, to prove them wrong, Karl changed car. In the second practice, he achieved pole position yet again with an even faster time.
BORN UNDER THE SCORPIO SIGN. The company's famous scorpion badge comes from Karl
Abarth's astrological sign, Scorpio.
