Steel, aluminum, magnesium, TWIP (Twinning-Induced Plasticity) and composite solutions such as carbon fiber. Today’s cars are still around 75% metal. The challenge faced by the researchers at FCA’s Global Materials Labs is to find new materials that are lighter, stronger and capable of deforming on impact to absorb energy. The objective is to improve the safety and sustainability of the cars of the future.

Researchers at FCA’s Global Materials Labs study ways to give new properties and applications to existing materials. New materials are created and tested in the lab and the performance characteristics of existing materials are enhanced.
Intelligent plastics and resins that are conductive, surfaces that are dust resistant, non-shiny or even that repair themselves… the cars of the future are already here. And the evolution has begun with steel and other metals that are the true core of an automobile.
