CIRCULAR ECONOMY: The Natural Approach to Sustainable Value

In recent decades, demands on the planet’s resources have increased to a level that now represents a significant threat to our environment. The economy is also highly dependent on our ability to manage these finite resources. As such, the transition to a circular economy – and away from the traditional “take-make-dispose” or “linear” economy – is vital to a sustainable future.

In a circular economy, products are designed for an extended life with components and materials that can be recovered or recycled – continuously. This offers significant benefits not only for the environment, but also for the sustainability of the economy.

FCA is contributing daily to this transition. One example is the active promotion of biomethane as an alternative and renewable fuel.

Biomethane is obtained by upgrading biogas, which is produced from various forms of organic waste (including agricultural and household waste). Biomethane is a viable alternative fuel that can contribute to reducing pollution in urban areas. In fact, over the entire cycle, CO2 emissions from a vehicle running on biomethane are equivalent to an electrified vehicle using renewably generated electricity.

Biomethane: The Renewable Natural Gas

All of FCA’s natural gas models can also run on biomethane. Previously a niche segment, in recent years the natural gas vehicle market has grown significantly. FCA is the leading producer in Europe, with more than 160,000 natural gas passenger cars and commercial vehicles sold between 2013 and 2015 and a total of 700,000 sold since 1997.
