Jeep® Cherokee: Adventure Returns

A New, More Premium Design and Latest Generation Technology for the Most Capable Mid-size SUV

September 12, 2018 – Jeep® Cherokee, the most capable mid-size SUV, returns with a new, authentic and more premium design and greater technological content ready to tackle both city traffic and off-road adventures. More than 300 journalists from around Europe recently had the opportunity of discovering the new vehicle during a test drive along the southern coast of Sicily, in places made known by the Italian TV series “Commissario Montalbano”. The journalists put its abilities to the test on both an off-road circuit in the beautiful area around Ragusa – created especially for the event – as well as on long stretches of road and freeway.

The striking look of the new model is faithful to the brand’s classic lines, but with an original, modern flavor. The interior has been enriched with new materials, additional storage and increased rear cargo space.

The new Jeep Cherokee offers an efficient 2.2-liter MultiJet II turbodiesel engine with two power levels: 150 hp, combined with a six-speed manual transmission, and 195 hp, coupled with an upgraded nine-speed automatic transmission.

Jeep Cherokee Adventure

Elegant and bold

One of the new Cherokee’s most striking features is the redesigned front fascia with new LED projector headlamps that incorporate daylight running lamps and fog lamps with shiny trim. Another feature is the signature waterfall hood made of ultra-lightweight aluminum and separate from the front fender, further contributing to the Cherokee’s distinctive, premium look. The rear has also been restyled with new optical groups featuring red LED tail-lights that frame the brake and indicator lights. The redesigned, lightweight composite liftgate now includes an integrated light strip with release handle positioned higher for added ease of use and an automated hands-free opening feature operated by making a kicking motion in the activation zone located below the rear bumper. Another new feature is the new capless fuel fill. And, of course, the panoramic, dual-pane CommandView power sunroof, which extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle.

Practical and comfortable

The updated interior offers maximum comfort and practicality while retaining its elegance. Additional storage areas and new technological content are further enhanced by a sophisticated design and high-quality materials. A Piano Black and Satin Chrome finish provides an elegant setting for the radio, air vent, and gear shift, creating a tailored and harmonious look. The electric brake button is positioned next to the gear shift for ease of operation. Depending on the trim, certain nine-speed automatic, all-wheel drive models also have integrated gearshift controls on the steering wheel.

The reconfigurable instrument panel features a 3.5” LED TFT screen in grayscale or a 7” full-color display. The latter is easily configurable even while driving and provides information related to navigation, speed, real-time fuel economy, safety warnings, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, as well as Jeep-specific features, such as Selec-Terrain.

Rear cargo capacity has also been increased by 70 liters to 570 liters (up to the pullover canopy). With the back seats lowered, capacity can reach up to 1555 liters.

To each his engine

The new model is equipped with a 2.2-liter MultiJet turbodiesel engine incorporating Stop/Start technology. It is available in a 150 hp version with 4x2 configuration and six-speed manual transmission that delivers 305 Nm of torque; and a 195 hp version with 9-speed automatic transmission and 450 Nm of torque. This engine option is available in both 4x4 and 4x2 configurations: the latter is a first for the Cherokee range. The engine features a new variable geometry turbocharger integrated into the exhaust manifold, which reduces engine weight and improves gas treatment functionality.

From 2019, the new turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, direct-injection 270 hp engine will also be available with nine-speed automatic transmission, Stop/Start technology and all-wheel drive.

Another new feature is the software that manages the TorqueFlite 9-speed automatic transmission, which has been optimized for greater responsiveness, faster acceleration and smoother power delivery. And for the first time ever, the new Cherokee also offers a manual mode with steering-mounted, paddle-shift for additional sportiness and driving comfort.

Off-road spirit

The new Cherokee offers a choice of three all-wheel drive systems, including Jeep Active Drive I, which has been completely redesigned and requires no driver input. All 4x4 systems come with rear-axle disconnect technology that results in reduced energy loss when 4x4 capability isn’t needed, while at the same time improving fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between two- and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management without input from the driver.

More features for UconnectTM

Depending on the trim, the new Cherokee comes with UconnectTM 7.0 or UconnectTM 8.4 NAV systems, which offer enhanced processing power and high-resolution touchscreens. The touchscreens also enable Apple CarPlay and Android AutoTM functionalities, some of which contribute to increased safety. In particular, hands-free calling, navigation and text-to-talk features. Navigation starts with an intuitive voice command system, standard on UconnectTM 8.4” NAV. The latter also offers UconnectTM LIVE services to view and monitor a range of applications on the display by connecting your smartphone to the vehicle.

A whole range of safety and security features

A complete range of safety features has been installed on the new Jeep Cherokee: Active Forward Collision Warning-Plus and Pedestrian Emergency Braking, Advanced Brake Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus, Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path Detection, ParkView rear view camera with dynamic grid, Active Speed Limiter and eight standard airbags. And, in addition to all of this, Mopar® Connect, an innovative set of connected services dedicated to safety, security and remote vehicle control.
