Jeep® Goes Hybrid

Jeep® Renegade and Jeep® Compass Plug-in Hybrids Debut at the Geneva International Motor Show

Jeep Compass Hybrid

March 25, 2019 - “We’re writing a whole new chapter in the Jeep story. These are the first of a new generation of vehicles, designed for a new generation of drivers,” said Jeff Hines, Head of Jeep® Brand EMEA, as he presented the new Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) in front of the FCA stands at the Geneva International Motor Show. These new Jeeps are all about innovative ideas in sustainable mobility and respect for the environment, without sacrificing the performance or true spirit of the brand – not to mention the benefits these new vehicles bring to us all.
On the back of record global sales (and here in Europe we went from 19,000 units sold in 2009 to 170,000 in 2018), Jeep, a brand known for its pioneering spirit, has taken another step forward for the environment. Application of plug-in hybrid technology is a step toward no-compromise electrification harmoniously integrated with the core structure of these best-selling models.

Greater Power and Range

The two models have high-capacity batteries, rechargeable from an external power source, enabling them to use more powerful electric motors with a range of roughly 50 kilometers (30 miles) and a top speed of 130 km/h (80 mph). The electric motor works in synergy with the new 1.3L turbo-charged engine to increase overall efficiency. This enables the Renegade, for example, to achieve power output ranging from 190 to 240 hp and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (60 mph) in around seven seconds.

Even More Fun

Jeep Renegade Hybrid

Due to the responsiveness and fluid acceleration of the PHEV versions, the traditional capabilities of the Compass and Renegade are further enhanced making them even more fun to drive. Of course, they are also extremely quiet and environment-friendly, with CO2 emissions of less than 50 g/km. The electric motor’s high torque can be controlled with extreme precision during acceleration or in challenging off-road conditions requiring lower torque ratios. With the new electric all-wheel drive (eAWD) technology, the rear wheels are driven directly by the electric motor, negating the need for a drive shaft. This allows for separation of the two axles to manage torque independently and more effectively than the traditional, mechanical approach. The instrument panel and infotainment screens of the Renegade and Compass have also been updated to provide information relating to management of the hybrid powertrain.

Innovative Technology that is True to the Brand’s Core Values

Visitors at the Geneva Motor Show saw how Jeep is capable of remaining true to its philosophy of overcoming all limits, while continuing to develop innovative solutions that take its models to the next level of freedom, authenticity, adventure and passion. Today’s challenge is to maintain these high standards while transitioning to PHEV technology, and the brand has demonstrated it is up to that challenge. With the new PHEV Renegade and Compass, Jeep’s trademark “go anywhere, do anything” capability is guaranteed.
