July 10, 2020 - Recharging your car from your home has been made simple. In collaboration ENGIE Eps, FCA is offering customers the easyWallbox, an easy-to-use plug-and-play charging unit.
Roberto Di Stefano, Head of EMEA e-Mobility at FCA, explained its genesis and development during a real-world experiment at high altitude: a brand new Jeep Renegade 4xe was taken up to 1800 meters above sea level on the plain of Val Vigezzo, a picturesque area of northern Italy on the border with Switzerland. The car was charged using an easyWallbox installed at a mountain refuge nestled in the snow-covered slopes of midwinter. This innovative, compact charging unit removes an obstacle that has deterred many from switching to electric mobility.
Buyers of the Jeep® Renegade and Jeep Compass 4xe will receive an easyWallbox with their new vehicle. All they need to do is fasten it to a wall in their garage or outside their house with two screws and connect it to the mains via a Schuko socket, just like any household appliance.
There are several types of wallboxes on the market, most of which are expensive and require modifications to the electrical system and might even need masonry work or surveys certifying that the system is safe. A whole host of things to do and costs that could discourage even the most convinced supporters of an environmentally-friendly lifestyle.
easyWallbox gets round all these obstacles, as it can be used just like any other everyday electrical device. It is already a surprise in that respect. But then comes another technological surprise: the unit is designed not to overload the home mains or exceed your power contract. "With easyWallbox, you can set your car to charge in the evening and by the morning it will have accumulated 25 kWh of energy, enough for a range of around 180 kilometers*,” Di Stefano explained.
*Assumes home power supply of only 3 kWh. With home power supply of 7 kWh or more, battery will be fully recharged overnight.
